Are you making the nurse salary that you should be? There comes a time — maybe five years or maybe even two decades — when you might have to reckon if you’re being paid your worth.

You’re not alone. In American Nurses Foundation’s November 2022 “Pulse on the Nation’s Nurses Survey Series: Annual Assessment Survey,” 31% of respondents planned on leaving their current workplace in the next six months, pursuing higher nurse salaries.

So if you’re wondering if you’re making below average or in the top one percent of earners, you’re in the right place.

Read our nurse salary breakdown and learn the answer to what both seasoned and new nurses question: How much do nurses actually make?

What Is The Average Nursing Salary?

The mean licensed practical and licensed vocational nurse salary is $55,860, according to May 2022 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

? A Quick Note on Mean vs. Average Salary: Average is defined by the sum of all salaries divided by the fifty states. Mean salary is defined by the average set of values.

The mean nurse salary is one data point, and does not not tell the whole story. Multiple factors decide how much nurses make, including:

  • Experience: Let’s get real for a moment. If the ink just dried on your nursing certification, you will not have the same earning potential as nurses 25 years into their career.
  • Occupation: “Nursing” spans an array of occupations, and unsurprisingly, some nursing professions have a higher salary range than others. We’ll explain in the next section.
  • Location: The local cost of living will vastly influence your nurse salary projection. For example, nurses in NYC will make more money than nurses in Oklahoma City.

How Much Do Nurses Make By Occupation?

Let’s face it. “Nursing careers” just doesn’t cut it. “Nurse” is an overarching term that encompasses a variety of disciplines. Nurse assistants perform a different function than nurse instructors. For this reason, you’ll get a wide range of salaries googling “nurse salary” or “how much should I make as a nurse.”

Don’t fret—learn where you fall on the spectrum of nurse salaries. Here are the mean nurse salaries broken down by occupation.

Nursing OccupationMay 2022 National Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates
Nursing Instructors and Teachers, Postsecondary$84,180
Registered Nurse$89,010
Nurse Anesthetist$205,770
Nurse Midwives$122,450
Nurse Practitioners$124,680
Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses$55,860
Home Health and Personal Care Aides; and Nursing Assistants, Orderlies, and Psychiatric Aides$32,440
Nursing Assistants, Orderlies, and Psychiatric Aides$36,270
Nursing Assistants$36,220

How Much Do Nurses Make By State?

Your location impacts your pay? What!? You bet it does.

Here’s the deal: Metropolitan areas have a higher cost of living than small towns. Most employers adjust their salary range to accomodate the local cost of living. So even a specific nursing occupation may vary in pay.

Take a look at licensed practical and licensed vocational nurse salaries organized by state.

Fatigue, loss of motivation, decreased satisfaction — if this sounds like you, you may be dealing with nurse burnout.

Burnout amongst nurses isn’t a new phenomena. However, nurse burnout didn’t receive national attention until the Covid-19 pandemic in which nurses were on the frontlines reckoning with a novel virus in a perilous environment.

Read our complete guide to nurse burnout and learn how to prevent burnout.

What Is Nurse Burnout?

You may have felt burnout, but do you know what it is? Let’s define it.

First off, burnout is an occupational condition, not a medical phenomenon, according to the World Health Organization. Read that again. Burnout is an occupational condition.

Nurse burnout is caused by the often stressful environments nurses report to daily. In addition, nurses perform physically and emotionally demanding work that can have lifechanging impacts adding to the stress.

All things considered, nurse burnout is a prevalent issue that has the potential to impact all nurses. Continue on to learn the extent of nurse burnout.

Nurse Burnout Statistics

Unfortunately, nurse burnout is not an uncommon occurrence.

Forty-seven percent of nurses report that they’re beginning to feel burnout, presently burned out, or completely burned out and may need assistance, according to American Nurses Foundation’s November 2022 “Pulse on the Nation’s Nurses Survey Series: Annual Assessment Survey.”

As a result, 19% of nurses who responded to the survey intend to leave their position in the next six months. Likewise, 27% of nurses are considering leaving their position in the next six months.

Signs of Nurse Burnout

Nurse burnout symptoms aren’t always easy to identify because they often mask themselves as other ailments. For example, a troubled night of sleep may not be out of the ordinary. Likewise, an occasional bad mental health won’t raise a red flag, especially if you have other stressors. However, multiple ongoing symptoms occurring simultaneously may be an indicator that something deeper may be occurring.

So if you suspect there’s more to your symptoms than just your out-of-character moodiness, keep reading to learn about the signs of nurse burnout.

BehavioralEmotionalPhysical
ProcrastinationCynicismChanges in appetite
Reduced efficacyFeeling detachedFatigue
Reduced performanceHelplessnessFrequent
Withdrawal from normal activitiesLoss of motivationStomachaches

Keep in mind this list of nurse burnout symptoms is not an exhaustive list. If you are experiencing nurse burnout symptoms, you may want to consult with a doctor or counselor to ensure it’s not another ailment.

Reasons for Burnout

Can you prevent burnout? Yes and no. To better explain, let’s first take a look at the reasons for burnout.

In American Nurses Foundation’s November 2022 survey, “Pulse on the Nation’s Nurses Survey Series: Annual Assessment Survey,” 12,581 nurses responded to “What contributes most to your workplace burnout?” The results are as follows:

  • 34% responded that there’s not enough staff
  • 12% feel that they lack their employer’s respect
  • 10% report too many administrative tasks
  • 9% report insufficient compensation
  • 8% work too many hours.

One or more of these may be true for you if you are experiencing burnout.

The question remains, however, can you prevent nurse burnout? Yes! With a comprehensive self-care routine and supportive work environment, you can ward off burnout and improve your livelihood. Keep reading to learn how to prevent nurse burnout.

How to Prevent Nurse Burnout

Spend Time With Friends and Family

Will planning a family outing really help burnout? The research suggests yes!

In “Pulse on the Nation’s Nurses Survey Series: Annual Assessment Survey,” 70% of nurses reported that spending time with their friends and family strengthened their well-being.

Spending time with family and friends increases our sense of belonging and purpose, improves our self-confidence and self-worth, and helps you cope with traumas, according to the Mayo Clinic.

So if you’re feeling the onset of burnout, reach out to a friend or family member.

Planning a family game night, attending a niece’s birthday party, going out to lunch with your closest comrades — all of these are great examples of how you can ward off nurse burnout.

Ask For Help

Burnout can feel isolating and frustrating with no end in sight. And some things can’t be fixed with a vacation day. If your preferred coping mechanisms don’t give you relief, ASK FOR HELP.

There is zero shame in reaching out to a mental health professional or doctor.

As a nurse, you know that healthcare providers can assess your chronic symptoms and offer long-term solutions.

Change Your Environment

At the end of the day, nurse burnout is an occupational condition. You can take steps to improve your wellbeing, but if your work environment does not improve, you may continue to experience nurse burnout.

This isn’t a call to quit nursing. That is a personal decision that should be discussed with your family, friends, and counselors.

So what are we saying? Consider a change of pace and location. The nursing profession offers a multitude of nursing contracts.

Per diem nursing allows you to pick up shifts as you feel appropriate, allowing you to maintain your nursing career and care for your mental health. Travel nursing is also an opportunity which allows nurses to change their environment and travel to desirable destinations.

Conclusion

Nurse burnout is a prevalent and ongoing issue. Confronting and discussing the issue candidly is the first step to solving the epidemic profession-wide. Continue the conversation with nurses in your life and share this blog.

July is the hottest month of the year for most US cities, so it makes sense that UV Safety Awareness Month would coincide with it. Skin health is pretty important, but we don’t often think about it as much as other aspects of our general health. In order to keep our providers as safe as possible, we wanted to share a few UV safety tips to improve your skin health and keep yourself protected from harmful rays.

Our Jogan Health nurses working in sunny new cities have ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. If you are one of these nurses enjoying the sun, read our UV safety tips to protect yourself from harmful rays.

UV Safety Tips to Prevent and Mitigate Sun Damage

Wear Sunscreen

We don’t just mean when you go to the beach! During your time between shifts, or whenever you are headed outside for a long period of time, make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

UV safety tips

Apply it to every exposed area of your skin and — this part is key — wait at least 15 minutes after applying it before going outside. Make sure to reapply every two hours. You might even need to use it more frequently if you are sweating or swimming, as it can wash off over time.

? Learn from an expert. Dendy Engelman, M.D, explains how to apply sunscreen correctly.

Stay in the Shade

Peak sunlight hours might vary depending on where you’ve been placed. A good rule of thumb is to assume that the sun is at its strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Even if you don’t feel like the heat is that bad, harmful levels of UV rays might be present. Taking a break in the shade for a few minutes is one of the best ways to reduce your exposure.

Consider Protective Clothing

Wearing protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts might make you feel hot in the intense heat — especially after a long day in scrubs! However, the risk of conditions like skin cancer is well worth mitigating in any way possible.

Consider wearing long, breathable pants and wide-brimmed hats to minimize direct sun exposure. It’s also a good idea to ensure the clothes you are wearing — even if they don’t fully cover your skin — have a UPF rating for added sun protection.

Wear the Right Sunglasses

Skin isn’t the only part of you that’s at risk when exposed to UV rays. Your eyes can also sustain significant damage if left unprotected. Try to wear sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection and block both UVA and UVB rays.

Try to Avoid Reflective Surfaces

Remember that surfaces like sand, water, and snow can reflect the sun’s rays, increasing your exposure. Take extra precautions in these environments.

Research Your Area’s UV Index

Check the UV index for your area before making plans after your shift. This index can inform you of the intensity of UV radiation in your area, which can be especially helpful in a new city where you don’t know the average amount of sunlight.

? UVA rays VS. UVB rays. Learn more about the differences in UV radiation with Healthline.

Drink Plenty of Water

At Jogan Health, we are big fans of water. Though it is common knowledge that water is healthy for your overall health, did you know that drinking plenty of it can also keep your skin hydrated and healthy? If you have a hard time remembering to drink water, check out the HidrateSparkPRO smart water bottle, which reminds you to meet your hydration goals through glow reminders and app compatibility.

How To Stay Current in Your Nursing Career

The last few years have seen significant shifts in the nursing industry in response to numerous factors. From advancements in technology, to changes in healthcare delivery models, different patient needs, and a growing emphasis on preventive care, the profession is always evolving. If you’re asking yourself, “how am i supposed to stay current in my career?” We have just the answer.

🔮  The Nursing Industry Future. Learn about the six trends that are changing the future of nursing

Whether you are a veteran or a newcomer in this field, Jogan wants to help keep you relevant in your nursing career. Here is a list of the changes that are occurring and some advice to help you say informed.

Changing nursing industry

Tips on how to stay relevant in your nursing career

Technological Integration

Technology is transforming nursing practices in many ways. Electronic health records (EHRs) have become standard. This lets nurses access patient information more efficiently. Mobile health applications and wearable devices are increasingly used to monitor patients remotely.

This has changed care coordination and patient engagement for the better. Another new change is the increase in telehealth and virtual nursing offerings, which allows nurses to provide care remotely, particularly in rural or underserved areas. Make sure to stay tech-savvy, so you can continue to care for your patients in an increasingly digital world.

💻  More about EHR/EMR. Learn about the impact with the Primary Care Development Corporation.

Specialization and Advanced Practice

The nursing profession has seen a rise in specializations. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), such as nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists, have gained more prominence. If you add specializations to your resume and constantly learn new skills, you can better address the growing demand for primary care providers and help your team bridge the gap in healthcare access.

Collaborative and Team-Based Care

Healthcare is shifting toward a more collaborative and team-based approach. Nurses are playing increasingly important roles within interdisciplinary teams, working closely with physicians, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.

This new model prioritizes teamwork and cohesive treatment, promoting better patient outcomes. It is in your best interest to increase horizontal communication between you and your teammates, so you can join in this approach and learn from your co-workers and leaders.

🩺 Learn from an expert. Dr. Jenna Liphart Rhoads, Ph.D, RN, CNE, talks about the roles nurses play that make them the heart of healthcare.

Emphasis on Prevention and Population Health

With a focus on preventive care and population health management, nurses are taking on roles in health promotion, disease prevention, and community education. They are involved in chronic disease management, vaccinations, health screenings, and lifestyle interventions.

Do not shy away from working in these areas, even if it means a different context than a traditional hospital. Not only will it make you look more competitive in the market; it will also teach you new skills, help you avoid repetitive tasks, and improve your standing in this competitive profession.

Nursing Education and Research

Nursing education is evolving to meet the changing demands of the healthcare landscape. There is an increasing emphasis on evidence-based practice, research utilization, and lifelong learning. Nursing programs are incorporating informatics, genomics, and other emerging areas to prepare nurses for the future. Additionally, nurses are actively involved in research, contributing to evidence generation, and shaping clinical practice.

What does this mean for you? If you are a veteran, you can learn about new advancements. If you are a new nurse, you can contribute to the nursing and healthcare canon, making a name for yourself and expanding on new knowledge. Never stop being a student!

Addressing Healthcare Disparities

Nurses are advocating for health equity and addressing healthcare disparities. They strive to provide culturally competent care and promote inclusivity. They are also working to eliminate biases in healthcare delivery and ensure equitable access to quality care for all individuals.

Make sure you are part of this process by staying educated on healthcare access disparities and ensuring you make room for individual patients and their specific needs.

🩺 Still wondering the importance of this topic? Learn the answers to common questions about the disparities in health and healthcare.

Workforce Challenges and Well-Being

The nursing profession faces workforce challenges, including nursing shortages, burnout, and high turnover rates. Efforts are being made to address these issues by improving working conditions, enhancing support systems, promoting work-life balance, and prioritizing nurse well-being.

However, the nationwide nursing shortage might not be an obstacle for you as a nurse. It might even be an opportunity, especially if you are willing to take travel contracts.

A Story of Strength in the Face of Adversity

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.July 20, 2023

In a move that displays true empathy, Jogan Health offered two tickets to Katherine Gibson and her sister Laura. Unlike concert ticket winners from the Jogan Health Concert Ticket Giveaway, this gesture stems from a truly inspiring story, and not from luck or chance.

CEO Dan Dietrich, influencer Nurse Johnn, Katherine, Brand Manager Nicole Zimmerman, and Laura getting ready to kick-off an evening of making memories at the Taylor Swift concert.

Katherine contacted Jogan Health to share this testimonial and it moved CEO Dan Dietrich and his team immensely. Inspired by her sister’s work as a NICU speech pathologist, her mother’s work as an RN, and her roommate’s recent family loss to cancer, Laura decided to put her newfound love for cycling toward a worthy cause.

She enrolled in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a Massachusetts-based bike-a-thon that raises funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. While training, Laura was struck by a car and suffered an orbital fracture, considerable facial trauma, and a concussion.

When Katherine heard that her sister was undergoing critical care in a medical facility near her work, she had to maintain her composure and finished her shift.

I knew that I was surrounded by people who needed me and that my sister was in great hands. As healthcare providers, we often need to put on a mask for the sake of our patients, and so that's what I did.

“I have Taylor Swift concert tickets, can I still go?” Those were the first words out of Laura’s mouth upon waking. The doctors denied her request, as she needed to remain under observation to ensure she was not suffering from neurological damage.

Dietrich jumped at the chance to make Laura and Katherine’s day. On a call with Jogan Health, they were invited to watch Taylor Swift perform live from Jogan’s private suite at Empower Field in Denver.

“This story means a lot to all of us at Jogan. Both Katherine and Laura showed immense fortitude during this time, and their family of healthcare providers has always prioritized care for their patients. It was a wonderful opportunity to give back and thank them for the important work they do,” said Dietrich. “We are thrilled to help create a memory that will last a lifetime.”

Katherine and Laura attended the Taylor Swift concert on 7/14 and it is Jogan Health’s hope that the experience helps them get through the months of recovery ahead.

nurse staffing agency

Due to the changes happening in the healthcare industry today, there is lot of pressure that falls on HPs. This is especially true when it comes to credentialing, placement, and continuity while on the job. A nurse staffing agency can be a valuable resource for healthcare professionals seeking employment opportunities. It can make finding the right facility a breeze!

Here are several ways a nurse staffing agency can help you focus on the things that you love about nursing. You can care for patients and experience new roles, without having to worry about the placement process itself.

6 Benefits of Using A Nurse Staffing Agency Like Jogan Health

Job Placement

This one might be obvious. Staffing services can connect you with potential job opportunities that match your qualifications, experience, and preferences. They maintain relationships with various healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home healthcare hospitals, and can help you find suitable positions that align with your goals.

Access to a Wide Range of Job Opportunities

A nurse staffing agency’s connections ensure that you have access to a huge network of healthcare providers. This means they can present you with a variety of job opportunities. Whether you are looking for temporary, contract, or permanent positions, they can ensure your skills find the perfect home.

Streamlined Application Process

Applying for nursing positions can be time-consuming and involve multiple steps. Partnering with an agency can simplify this process! They handle much of the administrative work, including updating your resume, verifying your credentials, conducting background checks, and completing other necessary paperwork. This saves you time and effort, allowing you to focus on your passion, while they work out the nitty gritty details.

Career Guidance and Support

The assistance does not end when you are placed at the right organization. Nurse staffing agencies have teams of experienced recruiters and continuity specialists who offer career guidance and advice while on the job. They can help you assess your skills, identify areas for professional growth, and provide insights into current job market trends. This level of continuity can be beneficial in navigating your career path and making informed decisions.

Flexibility and Variety

A perk of working with an agency is that they offer flexible work schedules and locations. They often have positions available for part-time and per diem shifts, allowing you to choose time slots that fit your lifestyle and preferences. Moreover, they have access to opportunities in different healthcare settings, giving you a chance to gain experience in various specialties and add new tools to your nursing toolbox.

Competitive Compensation

The specialists at staffing agencies are knowledgeable about market rates and industry standards for nurse salaries.
